Editor’s Message

Greetings, NVBUA/MAC umpires,

Well, we’ve arrived at what I am sure is our collective favorite time of the year for those of us providing adjudication services on the local DC region high school baseball fields! Scrimmages are underway, private school games are underway and public schools will throw their first pitches this week. Once again, all of the hardworking staff of Blue Crew News have put together another edition of our beloved newsletter, submitted for your review and approval.

Presidents Message

With the regular season getting started, I want to remind everyone to keep your blocks up to date. I’ve been an assignor myself and let me assure you, there is nothing more frustrating than seeing someone with an open block who turns back an assignment at the last minute.

Mechanics

On March 8th, MAC/NVBUA Director of Training, Paul Porto and a crew of association umpires were assigned a scrimmage at Titans Field home of the Dominion High School of Loudoun County Public Schools.

Rules

Recently, I was reading a book that was hoping to dispel the myth that Abner Doubleday invented baseball. This led me to thinking about other baseball myths. Specifically myths about the rules of baseball.

Umpire Profile

Blue Crew Blues

Anthony Hemmans first came to us at MAC-NVBUA in the spring of 2013. During the months that followed in his first year, he came to realize, “They had to find out who I was.” Smart fellow that he is, Anthony determined that if he wanted to become “known,” he might consider a beneficial approach to that doorway, rather than, shall we say, lesser ways.
