High School Oriented Three-Man Umpire Mechanics Review
by Anthony Mayer
The primary benefit of the three-umpire system is having one umpire in front of a runner and one behind. Not always, but in most cases. Communication is crucial. You must know where your partners are and what they are doing to function as a unit. Partner awareness is very important when working in this system. The key to success in the three-umpire system is no different from the two-umpire system. Know your starting positions, fair/foul responsibilities along with catch/no-catch responsibilities and you will be successful.
If you are inexperienced in the three-umpire system, do some studying prior to game day and be prepared to know the basics. Below are four videos with animation to help you learn or review the fundamentals of the 3-man mechanics system. Have a good pre-game and enjoy yourself. If you are working on a playoff crew, it is because you earned it!
