Hi Folks,

Even though fall season is winding down, there is still a lot going on. Let’s jump right in…

Over the past few weeks, we have been experiencing some technical difficulties with Arbiter’s evaluation functions. With apologies for the delay in getting this resolved, I am pleased to report that Arbiter’s evaluation functions are now once again, fully operational. As you know evaluations are an important part of umpire development and our ratings. Please take a few moments at your earliest convenience and complete any evaluations that are outstanding in Arbiter.

I’d also like to take this moment to say that I’m humbled that you had the faith in me to elect me to another term as your president. It’s an honor to not only be a part of this group, but to be able to introduce myself as the president. I will NEVER take that for granted. I want to thank the retiring board members for their assistance throughout the previous year and welcome the new board members. I cannot tell you how excited I am by the thought of working with these men.

And there’s a lot to do! I don’t want to go into the board’s agenda quite yet, especially since the board hasn’t even met. All I can tell you right now is that we will be busy advocating for you. I can tell you now that one thing on my agenda is to get more members to our annual umpire party at Capitol One Park.

Hopefully, you got the invitation to the banquet. Remember, please don’t respond if you aren’t coming. If you think you might be able to come, but are not sure, please hold off until you know for sure. The vendor needs a final count by about two weeks before the banquet (roughly Thanksgiving). There is a registration link on the web site.

I was disappointed to see the UmpsCare Golf Classic canceled this year; let’s hope we get to play golf next year (or in my case, watch and heckle the golfers). UmpsCare however, is still going strong, and this holiday season, they are running the Holiday Hugs campaign. Follow the link below if you are interested and want more details.

Finally, I encourage you to read Gary’s portrayal of John Porter. His story resonates with me because, as a young umpire, I remember the things he is talking about. One of my favorite memories was a 15-inning playoff game at Yorktown with Bob Gustin. A trip to the state tournament was on the line (Oakton won). John, of course, coached Rob in the Falls Church Babe Ruth (good ball back then). His team was the Expos. You want pressure? How about being a rookie and the commissioner is the coach of one of the teams. I was there the day Jim Evans came up and ran a camp (South Lakes, maybe?). Some of the old guys can definitely see Gustin, Tim O’Toole, Rich Wolfe, and John Porter playing cards till all hours! What great memories.

Let’s get that kind of camaraderie back – 2026 style!

See you next time,

Dave Maher
